Not all probiotics are created equal. The ‘genus’ or the ‘species’ may be the same, however clinical trials and studies have proven that different strains of the same species do not behave the same – L.reuteri DSM 17938 is an example of this. It is a powerful strain, and one of the most well researched probiotic species. It is a producer of ‘reuterin’ – a strong antimicrobial substance including antiviral and antifungal properties.
Since 1990, the safety and health benefits of this strain has been confirmed through 148 human clinical trials in more than 14,000 people (of all ages) – infants, children, adolescents and adults. It is regularly found in tribes that live a ‘natural lifestyle’, but scarcely seen in people with a ‘modern lifestyle’.
It has superior effectiveness in a wide range of health conditions and for general gut health, as it is robust and able to withstand the gut’s harsh environment. It also adheres easily to the gastrointestinal wall and known to significantly colonise the stomach, and sections of the small intestine.
|L.reuteri has shown benefits in:|

L.reuteri DSM 17938 has been found to specifically increase or normalise microbiota diversity, Bifiobacteria and Lactobacilli genus’, and decrease or inhibit a wide variety of microorganisms – see chart below.
For optimal gastrointestinal health the body requires three safeguards
- Strengthening the microbiota (organisms) so there a wide variety of bacteria to inhibit disease causing opportunistic organisms flourishing, and to support the health and function of the gut.
- Improving the gut mucosa lining by tightening the gut wall and improving regeneration of intestinal cells, which allows the intestines to function effectively, remove pathogens, and reduce unwanted substances moving through the intestinal wall into the blood stream.
- Improving immune responses as 80-85% of the body’s immune cells reside in the gut.
Lactobacillus reuteri DSM 17938 supports all these safeguards for optimal gut health.
